Biostatistics Core

I.  Support for grant proposals & manuscripts

  • Quantitative study design & analysis plan (e.g., primary & secondary aims and hypotheses elicitation, power analyses & sample size calculations, design of experiments, approaches to sampling, analysis plan)
  • Review data quality. Data collection and cleaning cannot be supported by the Biostatistics Core due to limited resources available at this time. We will provide guidelines regarding data preparation for analysis.
  • Drafting of Analysis portion of Methods section, including providing quantitative references, as needed
  • Analysis (e.g., descriptive and inferential statistics, modeling, coding, handling missing data, etc.)
  • Drafting of Results section (e.g. interpretations of results, publication-quality graphs, tables, etc.)
  • Comprehensive feedback on grant proposal/manuscript to hopefully increase chances of funding/acceptance
  • Response to reviewers’ queries during the peer-review process

For grant proposals, a minimum of 5% FTE (or more, depending on level of involvement) as co-Investigator and co-authorship of manuscripts is expected. For manuscripts, co-authorship, including those deriving from PhD dissertations if substantial support is provided, is expected.

II.  Support for basic queries & initial consultation for grant proposals & manuscripts

Free 45-minute initial ‘big picture’ consultations. Deliverables can include:

  • Initial assessment of the project and potential viability
  • Initial feedback of potential data collection & analysis framework
  • Proposal for collaborative work beyond the initial consultation, when appropriate (see previous section)
  • Recommended literature review and/or dataset recommendations for those who may be exploring quantitative topics. Note that assignments, coding support, or support for students working on projects with other faculty are generally not within the scope of the Biostatistics Core.
  • Basic support for faculty (note that reviews of grant proposals such as FRGs/Catalyst/proposals for external funding or manuscripts are time-consuming tasks, so co-Investigator status/co-authorship is expected for review and detailed feedback and contributions)
  • Recommendation of alternative faculty with project-specific expertise, if needed

Preparation for initial 45-minute consultation

Consultation meetings will be held either during office hours on a first-come-first-serve basis or, ideally, by appointment. They can be conducted via email, WebEx, and/or by phone. Please email laura.gunn@uncc.edu or rajib.paul@uncc.edu to schedule your initial appointment. Be ready to outline the following during the initial 45-minute consultation:

  • Brief description of the scope of the problem, with a focus on your analytics needs
  • Identify measurable outcome(s) of interest for the grant proposal/manuscript
  • Identify the quantifiable factors (covariates) potentially affecting outcome(s) and how they will be measured
  • Describe data limitations & concerns (e.g. possible data quality/quantity concerns, missing data, etc.)
  • Earlier is better than later. We prefer if you come to us before you collect data to ensure the data collection plan (e.g. research design, sample size calculation/power analyses, etc.) matches the project’s scope and aims.
